Here we make use of formulae to calculate perimeter and area of different shapes.

PERIMETER

According to the Merriam Webster dictionary, Perimeter is the length around the outside of a shape. Perimeter is calculated by adding the lengths of the different sides of a shape. It is also important to keep in mind that perimeter is measured in units of lengths – cm, m, etc.

Perimeter

Perimeter = 10mm + 10mm + 4mm + 4mm = 28mm

Circumference

Circumference can simply be defined as the distance around a shape. The perimeter of a circle is called its circumference. Since perimeter is calculated by adding the lengths of the sides of a shape, you could be wondering how you’d calculate the perimeter of a circle. A different formula is used to calculate the circumference of circles. See example belowCircumferenceCircumference = 2πr where:

r = radius of a circle
d = diameter of a circle

What is π?

π or Pi is the sixth letter of the Greek alphabet. It is a name given to the ratio of the circumference of a circle to the diameter = 3.14159265.

Example of calculating circumference: If radius is 4.

So:

2 X 3.14159265 X 4 = 25.13274

Area

Area in relation to maths is defined as the size of a surface. Some will define area as the inside shape measured in units. There are different formulas used to calculate various shapes.
