CONFUSING WORDS



It’s easy to confuse words when writing. Here’s a list of some of the commonly misused words.

1. Avenge and Revenge What is the difference between the two words? ‘Revenge’ and ‘Avenge’ can be used interchangeably as verbs. However, avenge is normally used as a verb, while revenge can be used as either a noun or a verb
. i) Meaning – Avenge is to get payback, revenge for a wrong done to another or yourself
ii) Meaning – Revenge suggests justice with a strong sense of hatred.


Used in sentences: -She will revenge for the hurt you caused her.

-I will avenge my father’s death.
2. Affect and Effect These two words are closely related meanings, hence the confusion. Affect is used as a verb, while effect is used as both a noun and as a verb.
i) Meaning – Affect means to have an impact on something or someone.
ii) Meaning – Effect means a result of a cause.

Used in sentences: -What effect did the drought have on your business? - Did the drought affect your business?



3. There and Their
i) Meaning – There means that place or in that place.
ii) Meaning – Their means belonging to them.

Used in sentences: -Put it in there! -Please bring back their golf clubs.

4. Where and Were These two words are commonly misused.

i) Meaning – Where refers to a question about location of something or someone.

ii) Meaning – Were is the past tense of the verb are, or it can also be used as the plural form of was.

Used in sentences: -Where are the house keys? - We were in the office when the building collapsed.

5. Compliment and Complement

i) Meaning – A complement means something that makes up a whole, something that completes. ii) Meaning – A compliment is an expression of approval, praise, or congratulation.

Used in sentences: -He made a compliment about her dress but she ignored him -Her red stilettos complement the whole outfit. That’s it but more are coming soon.
