THE MEANING OF PUNCTUATION

Punctuation is a set of symbols used to construct and arrange writing. These symbols are very important when writing because they show the reader where to start and finish.

Punctuation marks help to make your writing understandable. Types of punctuation

1. Full stop (.)

2. Comma (,)

3. Semicolon (;)

4. Colon (:)

5. Apostrophe (‘)

6. Hyphen (-)

7. Dash (-)

8. Brackets ()

9. Inverted commas (“”)

10. Exclamation mark (!)

11. Question mark (?)

12. Bullet point (∙)

FULL STOP

Full Stops are used primarily in two instances;

1) At the end of the sentence. Example: The band travelled round UK and USA.

2) Full stops are also used in abbreviations Example: The band toured U.K and U.S.A last month.

Comma

In writing, a comma is like a pause (breathing spaces). Unlike full stops (periods), commas are used inside sentences. A comma can also be used to add to the meaning of a sentence or to emphasis a point.

One of the most important rules for using a comma is you shouldn’t put a space before a comma e.g. Can I please have a cup of coffee , and a muffin. Some examples of how commas can be used:

1) On our anniversary we went to the Century City, ate dinner, and went ice skiing.

2) Elijah’s nca Thursday consisted of steamed bread, soup, coffee, and dessert.

3) We haven’t met before, have we?

4) Yes, I’d love another cup, thank you.

Semi-colon

A semi-colon is used to connect two related sentences. Examples

1) Nathan likes white sugar; Loyiso likes brown sugar.

2) Thokozile is a great orator; she is eloquent.

Colon

A colon is used to simply introduce. There are three main uses of a colon.

1) To introduce a list: These are the three elements: Copper, Zinc and Nickel.

2) Before a quotation: He shouted: ‘Viva Africa, long lives the Mother Land!’

3) To introduce an explanation: Guests had to leave: the blankets had lice.
