Slang – A Debate

The actual definition of the word slang is: ‘a type of language that consists of words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, and are more common in speech than in writing’.

We all use slang – words that we might not use in front of our elders, that we might not have learned from a book, but that nonetheless mean something to us and those around us. Slang is deeply linked to individual cultures.

By using unofficial words that are understood within a given community, be it in a certain part of town or within a group of young people, you can create a sense of belonging, even comfort.
Slang is special somehow because it often includes words that are entirely made up or words that have been modified to express a different meaning. Keeping up with all these changes and knowing which slang to use can be tricky, but that’s part of the appeal: if you know the new slang, you’re on trend! However, in recent years Slang has influenced language in a more formal sense via The Dictionary.

For instance, the word Bootylicious has now been added to the dictionary…”Bootylicious” became famous through the Destiny’s Child song and Beyonce, the lead singer, started using the term extensively in the media.

In doing so, the word became attached to her franchise, and people all over the world started using it.
Although Beyonce was one of the main reasons that the word was added to the dictionary, she did not create the word. The word had gained credibility since the suffix- ”licious” was added to many words like ”glamalicious”. The suffix stems from the word ”delicious” and words that use this suffix usually imply a certain attractiveness… The main issues arising from adding slang to the dictionary are that many words get added that are not commonly used by all in daily language. But then again, ‘ambidextrous’ isn’t exactly a word that is used everyday either! The aura about slang words is that the words fade away.

Bootylicious may grow tired and people will not use it or forget its meaning. Questions arise around the fact that will the dictionary be filled with 21st century words that do not relate well with the next generation. Also, will the next generation know about ”formal language” if slang words are added to the dictionary under the veil of formally recognised ones? Will language lose it’s essence? The other side of the debate is that language is ever-changing.

The people control what stays and what goes, and adding the words of different people or groups seals their legacy and their existence.
